With captaincy debate continuing to rage Pakistan cricket, former skipper Javed Miandad has called on the members of the national team to focus on their performance instead of running after the top job.

The former batting great said if every player nurtured the ambition of becoming the national team captain then things would become difficult in the dressing room.

"When I played I just thought about getting an opportunity to play for my country and to perform well. If you deserve the captaincy you will eventually get it, so why run after it," Miandad told PTI in an interview.

The captaincy issue continues to be a hot topic in Pakistan cricket after senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf led the country in the Test tour of New Zealand last month following regular skipper Younus Khan's decision to opt out of the series, especially at a time when he was struggling for form.

But now with Younus announcing his availability for the one-day matches in Australia, a debate is raging as to whether the PCB would reinstate him as captain or continue with Yousuf.

Miandad, however, backed Yousuf for the job as he felt the right-hander had done a decent job in New Zealand, where Pakistan drew the Test series.

He also said that a captain should lead by example with his performance and felt it would be difficult for Younus to get back the position if Yousuf continues his good work.

"I also believe that unless a captain is performing himself it becomes very difficult for him to have control over the team. So the way I look at it if Yousuf continues to perform as a batsman it will be very difficult for the PCB to change him as captain," Miandad, who also coached the national team on three different occasions, said.

"If a captain is doing well why should anyone want to remove him in the first place?" he questioned.

Miandad also called on the national selectors and the team management in Australia to be consistent in giving chances to players.

"You need to have consistency in selection and players must be given proper opportunities. Too many changes in team don't allow a player to settle down."

Miandad said with a strong bowling line up, Pakistan had the potential to beat Australia in their own backyard.
